How to Identify Fire Ants

Fire ants have several characteristics that may help distinguish them, but other ant species can look similar.:

  • Color: Red imported fire ants are generally reddish brown with darker portions of the body.
  • Size: Workers vary in size, commonly from about 1/8 to 1/4 inch.
  • Behavior: Fire ants are highly aggressive and will swarm and sting if their nests are disturbed.
  • Mounds: Their mounds usually appear in sunny, open areas, although mound shape can vary with soil conditions. Do not disturb a suspected mound to identify it. Fire ants can swarm rapidly and sting repeatedly.

Fire Ant Treatment FAQs

Is fire ant treatment included in every Kumo program?

No. Fire ant treatment is included with Kumo’s Gold Program. Contact our team if you need help choosing the right pest-control program for your property.

How much property does fire ant coverage include?

The Gold Program includes fire ant treatment for lawns up to one acre.

What happens if my lawn is larger than one acre?

Kumo can treat properties larger than one acre for an additional per-acre charge. We’ll review the size of your lawn and explain the applicable cost before service.

Does Kumo treat individual mounds and the entire lawn?

Yes. Our technicians inspect the property for active mounds and may treat them directly with granules and/or sprays. We also apply a broadcast treatment across the lawn to control fire ants that may not be visible at the surface and help reduce new mound activity.

How often is fire ant treatment performed?

Fire ant treatment is performed quarterly through Kumo’s Gold Program. Treatment timing may be adjusted when appropriate based on property conditions, weather, pest activity, and product-label requirements.  We can come out for free re-services in-between quarterly visits.

Can fire ants return after treatment?

Yes. Fire ants can move into a lawn from nearby properties, and new queens can establish colonies after treatment. Quarterly service helps provide ongoing control, but no treatment can guarantee that fire ants will never return. Learn more about why fire ant mounds can return after treatment. If you notice new activity between scheduled visits, contact Kumo so we can review the situation and arrange a re-service when applicable.

Is fire ant treatment safe around children and pets?

Kumo applies fire ant products according to their labels and applicable safety requirements. Children and pets should remain away from the treatment area during application and for the period specified by the product label. Your technician will provide any instructions you need to follow before reentering the treated area.

How can I tell whether a mound contains fire ants?

Fire ant mounds commonly appear in sunny, open areas and may not have an obvious opening in the center. The ants are generally reddish-brown, vary in size, and can swarm rapidly when their colony is disturbed. Because other ants can create similar-looking mounds, appearance alone may not provide a reliable identification. Do not kick, step on, or probe a suspected mound. Kumo can inspect the area and determine the appropriate treatment.

What should I do after a fire ant sting?

Move away from the mound immediately, brush off any ants, and wash the affected skin with soap and water. A cold compress may help relieve localized pain and swelling. Avoid scratching the area or breaking any blisters or pustules that develop.
Call 911 immediately if the person has trouble breathing, swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, dizziness, fainting, widespread hives, or other signs of a severe allergic reaction. People who experience numerous stings, worsening symptoms, or signs of infection should contact a healthcare professional.
